I'm afraid I can't remember - it's over two years now since I played through it. It's not impossible though - I'm hardly the world's best gamer and I got there in the end (I do remember it took me a while though). YouTube might have a video walkthrough - you might get lucky trying that.

Valkyira Chronicles is my favourite ever ps3 game too. I just can't do with all the first person shooters out there. I was just about ready to sell my ps3 when I saw Vandal Hearts flames of judgement. It's a really good game, but I'm struggling with the big boss battle at the end. Any tips?

Build and function-wise, its a great controller no doubt. I don't know about lasting ability though. I just bought my PS3 a month ago and immediately dumped my DS3 for this, but right in the middle of a game last night it decided to un-sync. I figured battery was dead, so I plugged it in, but its still unsynced and I haven't been able to get it to work since. Great controller, but use at your own risk. I'll be heading out to look for another 360-like controller tonight.

Very similar to my memories of the place. I also liked the Namco wonderpark that was tucked away across Shaftesbury Avenue for a few years and had some really wacky stuff at times (arcade Quake!).

To be quite honest though no arcade can ever match the feeling of awe and wonder that they had in the 80s. Gaming has moved on, and is all the better for it.

I'm sorry to say but this controller SUCKS for fps, first of all the fit does not feel natural at all sorry to say, I have my left thumb and my right thumb in different positions which feels awkward to begin with, the xbox controller only worked because the trigger button was in the back and not the immediate front, forcing me to accomodate my index and thumb finger while simultaneously trying to to focus on the game. On top of this, while I'm playing a game and trying to get a pin-point shot this is next to impossible due to the awkward feel of the controller and my thumb attempting to compensate. Whoever tells you this is a quality controller is LYING, for 30 bucks it still feels like a rip-off and I got it for a gift, you're better off with Mad Catz

In the end, I went for a second-hand (though pristine) DSi, for £100 with a new copy of Dragon Quest VI (worth £20) in Gamestation. I thought it would be counter intuitive to buy a console just to play another console's games on it. Also, I'm not that interested in the 3D side of things, having played quite a bit instore and there are no 3DS games that I'm interested in (other than, maybe, that Julian Gollop one). Looking at the forward release list, only Paper Mario and Mario Kart would be definite purchases. The battery life also counted against it.

I'm definitely going to get a Vita on the day of its release in only a few months' time and I think, next gen, that will be my primary handheld platform, just like the DS has been this time around (as my PSP gathers dust in the corner).

So far I've enjoyed the DSi - the screen seems brighter and the colours more vibrant (though that could just have been in comparison my ageing, and somewhat scratched, DS). Slightly bigger too. And I've finally finished (this morning) Dragon Quest IX after 65 hours!

Over at Morrisons right now the 3DS is a very reasonable £120, actually cheaper than what they charge for a DSi. And, as an outspoken antagonist of the DS, I can't recommend a 3DS more, even if you don't use the 3D it's still a bloody good system. Just food for thought.

The button colour does affect me, even if just for a split-second, particularly on the 'X' and 'B' buttons. Having spent a couple of weeks pressing the DS's 'X' button when prompted to press 'Y' on that console, I think I'm fine that the top button on the 360 pad is the 'Y'! Equally, I'm fine that 'green' equals 'A'.

Maybe it's just something else that I can blame (as an alternative to a lack of competence) if things go wrong on-screen!

I don't play fighting games, though I can see that a decent D-pad would be the biggest advantage for that type of game (though I presume that a fighting stick is best of all).

Although I'm fully against this pad (Microsoft could have just released one without a gimped D-Pad, not with both, and charged the same as a standard controller. Nobody, after all, will ever want to chop and change between D-pads. And on top of that, the pad is still mounted on a ball joint, not eight seperate buttons like the PS3 controller, and as such still doesn't give the accuracy needed on fighting games. Where was I?), Does the button colour really affect you that much? As you said, a lot of games rely on split-second timing, and that doesn't give time for noting the colour of the button and then searching for it's location on the controller. Surely every X-Box user will have memorized their locations by now?

That being said, I still can't get my head around Nintendo's reverse button placement.

It almost certainly won't work with a PS2, as the tech is different. i haven't tried though.

As for when PS2 games are played through a PS3, unfortunately I can't tell you - European PS3s can't (and never have been able to) play PS2 games (and I'm in the UK). Sony took that functionality out before the Euro release, in order to reduce costs.

As all this pad is doing is mapping Dualshock 3 functionality onto a 360-style pad (but it is still a PS3 pad, abet not a Sony one), I'd have thought that, if you can use the Dualshock 3 when playing a PS2 game through the PS3, that you could use one of these. I can't say for certain though - probably best to find a US reviewer/blogger to ask.
